The armour of God

Paul wrote from captivity, probably with a Roman soldier beside him. He used the soldier's equipment as a picture of the spiritual battle. Click on a piece. (Ephesians 6:10-18)

  1. Belt of truth

The belt held everything together. Truth holds your life together: being honest before God, yourself and others.

Today: No double life. What you do online is who you are.

Where are you not completely honest?

    Ephesians 6:14

  2. Breastplate of righteousness

The breastplate protected the heart. You do not stand on your own achievements, but in what Jesus did for you.

Today: When an accusation comes into your head ("you are nothing"), know where you stand.

Which accusation do you often hear in your head?

    Ephesians 6:14, Romans 8:1

  3. Shoes of the gospel of peace

Roman soldiers wore studded shoes to stand firm. Peace with God gives you grip.

Today: Be someone who brings peace, at home and at work.

Where can you bring peace this week?

    Ephesians 6:15

  4. Shield of faith

The large Roman shield covered the whole body, and soldiers locked their shields together. Faith extinguishes the burning arrows of doubt and temptation.

Today: You stand stronger next to other men than alone.

Who stands next to you in the battle?

    Ephesians 6:16

  5. Helmet of salvation

The helmet protected the head. Your thoughts are a battlefield. Knowing you are saved protects your thinking.

Today: Watch what you let in: images, news, thoughts.

Which thought do you need to take captive today?

    Ephesians 6:17, 2 Corinthians 10:5

  6. Sword of the Spirit

The only weapon of attack: the word of God. Jesus resisted temptation in the desert with words from Scripture.

Today: Memorise one Bible verse that fits your battle.

Which verse do you want to have ready?

    Ephesians 6:17, Matthew 4:1-11

  7. Prayer

Paul ends with prayer, at all times, in the Spirit. Prayer is the line to headquarters.

Today: Pray briefly and often, and pray for the men beside you.

Which man are you praying for this week?

    Ephesians 6:18
